Android, Google's mobile operating
software, is on the roll. A report released by Gartner
claimed that Android grew phenomenally to take the
pole position among smartphone operating software
with a market share of 43.4% worldwide in Q2, 2011,
an increase of 26% in the last one year.
Symbian, the second largest operating software that
powers Nokia phones, saw its share shrink by over
18% to 22%. In terms of total mobile phone sales,
Nokia continued to be the leader with a market share
of 22.8%. tnn
This, however, is a decline of 8% from its share in the
second quarter of last year. Samsung, which is the
second on the list, has a market share of 16.3%.
Worldwide sales of mobile phones to end users totalled
428.7 million units in the second quarter of 2011, a
16.5% increase from the second quarter of 2010,
Gartner said. The report noted that sales of
smartphones were up 74% year-on-year and
accounted for 25% of overall sales in the second
quarter of 2011, up from 17% in same period of 2010.
According to the report, 51.4 million mobile phones
were sold in India in the second quarter, rising
marginally from 50.7 million in the first quarter. Gartner
said that smartphones would amount to 6% of
cellphone sells in India this year.
"Smartphone sales continued to rise at the expense of
