INDIA HAS 771.18 MILLION MOBILE SUBSCRIBERS

The mobile subscribers in the country touched 771.18
million by January end, with a net addition of 18.99
million connections in the month.As per TRAI the
wireless user base has grown 2.52 percent in the
month and reached a total figure of 771.18 million by
January end.The user base was 752.19 million in the
previous month.The share of urban subscribers has
declined to 66.42 percent from 66.65 percent in the
month,while the share of rural subscribers has
increased from 33.35 percent to 33.58.With this
increase the total number of telephone subscribers in
India reached 806.13 million,which includes both
wireless and wireline subscribers.This has registered a
growth of 2.39 percent.Now the overall teledensity in
India is 67.67. Bharti Airtel, which added 3.3 million
users and came first in subscriber additions.Now the
company’s subscriber base is 155.8 million.Reliance
Communications came second with an addition of 3.2
million new subscribers, taking its total subscriber
base to 128.87 million.Where as Vodafone added 3.1
million connections, taking its user base to 127.36
million subscribers.Idea cellular added 2.5 million new
customers and BSNL added 2.1 million new
customers.But on the other hand,the new operators
showed a dismal performance with their subscriber
base declining highly.Videocon has reported a decline
of 6.89 percent customers, with over one million
customers moving out of its network.Now Videocon
has 6 million customers.TRAI report also said that in
January, out of the total 771.18 million subscribers
only 548.66 million subscribers were active subscribers
on the date of peak visitor location register
(VLR).Visitor Location Register is a temporary
database of the subscribers who have roamed into the
particular area, which it serves. Each base station in
the network is exactly served by only one VLR,
hence a subscriber will not be present in more than
one VLR at a time.The proportion of VLR subscribers
is approximately about 71.14 % of the total wireless
subscriber base reported by the telecom service
providers.Coming to Circle-wise details, Jammu &
Kashmir has the highest proportion of VLR subscribers
with 81.26%, Assam came second with 81.02% and
Maharashtra has 77.58%. Mumbai has the lowest
proportion with just 59.59%. Service Provider wise,
Bharti Airtel leads with 92.63% which is closely
followed by Idea with 90.34%.On the other hand
Etisalat is at the bottom with 33.55%
